Food and Media Consumption: contemporary ways of thinking and consuming what we eat

This paper aims to discuss, by means of a bibliographic review, the construction of media representations of cooking and eating. To that end, relevant examples in the Brazilian context regarding the presence of food in the literature, on television and on the internet are mentioned. The main results were: in relation to the literature, the importance of food in the consolidation of a fancy about cuisines is discussed, and the thematic diversity of the works available in Portuguese in the domestic market is verified. Concerning the connection between food and television, this paper deals with the influence of culinary shows on the creation of a contemporary fancy shared around food, around those responsible for it (notably the chef), and around the different lifestyles it may inspire. And with respect to the presence of food on the internet, this work reflects about the new relationship possibilities intermediated by technology, which create new forms of getting informed and of expressing opinions about diets, restaurants and related subjects, as well as new ways of interacting with other commensals, chefs and characters of this area.
