Evaluation of interface design and usability of Portuguese media websites aimed at children and young people: Biggs, Jornalíssimo, and Visão Júnior.
Abstract
The present study was developed within the scope of the research project “Study on children and young people's experiences and expressions of the media”, funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, which aims to listen to and give voice to Portuguese children and young people, aged 11 to 18, with the aim of stimulating critical participation in digital media. One of the objectives of this project is the development of an online platform, entitled “Mural de Expressões” (Mural of Expressions), to stimulate this participation, for subsequent analysis. In order to identify the main interests of this target audience in using websites related to the media, as well as the main interface design guidelines to create engagement, expression, and critical participation of children and young people on the platform, three Portuguese media websites aimed at this audience were evaluated, namely: Biggs, Jornalíssimo, and Visão Júnior. For the analysis, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the people responsible for these websites to acquire a more detailed understanding about the projects. Subsequently, usability tests were conducted with six children between the ages of 11 and 18, corresponding to the target audience of the projects under study. The results gather a set of Design recommendations for the development of the online platform “Mural de Expressões” that will be developed within the scope of the bYou project.
