Anatomia de uma Catástrofe Mediática: Pedrogão Grande e a política da invisibilidade
Abstract
This research aims to study the role of the media in the news coverage of the Pedrogão Grande forest fire, contributing to the vast field of study on crisis communication. The aim of this reflection is to understand whether the various media agents carried out journalistic coverage that covered the structural causes of the fire. The analysis will focus on the chronological line of the coverage carried out by the Portuguese media over the two weeks following the start of the fire. To operationalize this objective, content analysis was carried out on a sample of 427 news items. The results show that, despite the intense interest of the media, the coverage was characterized by an omission of the causes behind the Pedrogão Grande events, namely climate change and the desertification of the Portuguese countryside. The main conclusion is that the Portuguese media, although intensely interested over the course of two weeks, did not cover the causes of the phenomenon in general terms.
