News about female protagonists in 1973: (in)visibilities in the centenary newspaper Notícias de Gouveia
Abstract
Starting in 1973 in Portugal, on the eve of the 25 April 1974 Revolution, we analyzed seven news articles from the centenary newspaper Notícias de Gouveia to reflect on women as news subjects. Using documentary analysis, with subsequent content analysis, the results partly reflect the invisibility of women, not only in the number of articles (only 9% of the total refer to women), but also in the use of concealment strategies, such as paying little attention to meritorious achievements or the use of lower-case letters and masculine definite articles. Three of the seven articles analyzed highlight German women in professional terms, mainly because they held positions that were uncommon for women at the time. The seven articles published (news only, as this is the journalistic genre found focusing on women) in 45 editions contrast with the 70 articles highlighting male protagonists, showing symbolic annihilation, in the sense of devaluing or concealing women's roles in a wide variety of areas, especially politics and sport.
