Media, Racism, and Football: analysis of brazilian and spanish newspapers on the vinícius júnior case
Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the representations and front pages of the main newspapers in Brazil and Spain regarding the case of racism involving the athlete Vinicius Junior in Spanish football, which occurred in May 2023 with subsequent developments. The study adopts an exploratory approach, grounded in the comparative method, using content analysis and the Budd score. The selection of the corpus was based on the circulation of newspapers in Brazil (Folha de São Paulo and O Globo) and Spain (El País and El Mundo), taking into account the relevance given to the subject alongside other topics such as politics, economy, sports, and culture for their readers. The results highlight the extensive coverage of this episode of racism experienced by the player Vinicius Junior, with O Globo giving greater emphasis in all categories. The qualities of representation underscore the Brazilian newspapers' focus on the punishment of the transgression, the historical review of other cases, and the subjective consequences for the athlete.
