A ética no Jornalismo – Análise comparativa da cobertura jornalística do conflito russo-ucraniano pelo Telejornal da RTP1 e pelo Jornal das 8 da TVI
Abstract
This study investigates the Code of Ethics for Portuguese Journalists rules’ compliance regarding television news coverage of the first week of the Russian’s invasion of Ukraine (from February 24 to March, 2 of 2022) on RTP1's Telejornal and TVI's Jornal das 8. Based on a comparative methodological design, the techniques used were content analysis, critical discourse analysis and interviews with editors of the channels' international sections and the first Portuguese freelance journalist to cover the conflict from Donbass. The results suggest that RTP1 performs better in terms of listening to parties with viable interests, diversifying and identifying sources, and clearly distinguishing between opinion and news. TVI stands out for its rigour and accuracy, its inclusion of sources involved in the conflict and its attribution of opinions. On both channels, there was a predominance of intimate imagery, full of life, and an individualization of political figures, with a particular focus on Vladimir Putin. Although Russia plays an active role in most of the discourse analysed, TVI gave Ukraine more often an active role. The separatists of the self-proclaimed republics were excluded from RTP1's material and appeared just four times in TVI's stories.
Key words: Journalism; journalism ethics; television; war; Ukraine.
