Monsters or non-conventional? An intersemiotic reading of creators and creatures in Frankenstein and Edward Scissorhands

This paper aims to analyze the convergent and divergent points between creators and creatures in the pre-Victorian Gothic novel Frankenstein (2017 [1817]), by Mary Shelley and the cinematographic work Edward Scissorhands (1990), by Tim Burton i n the perspective of the comparative literature and the intersemiotic translation. For the theoretical basis of our work, we have relied on the conceptions by Barboza (2017); Bertin (2016); Carvalhal (2006); Chevalier and Gheerbrant (2019); Clüver (2011); Culler (1999); De Martini and Coelho Júnior (2010); Kristeva (2005); Peirce (2005); Plaza (2003); Rajewiski (2012); Santaella (2004, 2005); Santos (2015); Soares (2018); and, Stam (2006). In conclusion, we have found that, from the perspective of non-conventionalism of creatures, Tim Burton (1990) reinforces in his work what Mary Shelley (1817) tried to transmit to society in the 19th century: that however much we are in a society with many advances in technological terms, the human being continues producing retrograde thoughts, ideas, speeches, and actions in the face of the many differences which exist between social beings.
