In 2020, we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the debut of Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari, an avant-garde film that influenced cinema through its macabre scenarios and dramatic projection of shadows. After all these years, not only did the work become one of the most influential movies of the genres that were generated from it, but it also became known as a pillar in the history of Cinema by presenting us with intentional shadows, some of them painted and others manipulated, and distorted environments that create iconic elements of visual semiotics. To celebrate its centenary, this article examines the way in which shadows and scenarios are used in the film, their purpose, the way they symbolize feelings of madness and the influence they have had on subsequent generations of filmmakers.
