Entre passagens e paisagens: Ciganos e o Nordeste do Brasil no documentário de Olney São Paulo
Abstract
This article proposes an analysis of the documentary Cigano do Nordeste (1976), directed by Brazilian filmmaker Olney São Paulo, aiming to understand how the film represents both the figure of the Gypsy and the Brazilian Northeast. The research focuses on the analysis of mise en scène, exploring the specificities of the documentary's production process, especially through the narrator's voice-over commentary and the testimonies of the filmed subjects. The study seeks to interpret the metaphor crafted by the director about the Gypsy, linking this representation with a thematic and representative approach that Olney São Paulo develops in his filmography, as he documents the town of Santana, located in the Bahian interior, along with its cultural and social characteristics.
