Repetition and the Montage of Archival Images in Rithy Panh’s Irradiés (2020)
Abstract
The article examines Irradiés (2020), by Rithy Panh, highlighting repetition as a procedure to reinscribe images of twentieth-century wars and genocides. Around Hiroshima, the film brings together both established and less visible archives, from Cambodia and from colonial contexts, shifting visual hierarchies and the historical gaze. The voice-overs organise the experience through series and questions, elaborating the gaze in the face of violence.
