The exordial character of a diplomatic discursive genre
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to analyze some of the argumentative functions of the discursive genre “opening speech in multilateral diplomatic forums”. As a case study, we selected the speech by Antonio Guterrez, the current Secretary-General of the United Nations (SGNU), delivered at the opening of the General Debate of the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which took place in September 2023. The results show that the configuration of the communicative situation and the institutional role of the speaker give the genre in question an exordial character, since, in addition to the chronological anteriority of the elocution, the speech would aim to prepare the audience cognitively, intersubjectively and emotionally, amplifying certain guiding values of the entity.
